Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps are designed to be located underwater. There are two types available: those suitable for clean water and those configured to hand dirty water.
Clean water pumps are suitable for use with relatively clear water sources, such as pools, cisterns, or pipe leaks. The fluids they can pump generally cannot contain particles above 1mm in size. Dirty water pumps can also be used in the pumping of clear water, but have the added benefit of being able to pump water that contains particles and contaminations such as mud and salt.
Submersible pumps can be used for a range of applications. Single stage pumps (one impeller) are used when working with sewage pumping, industrial pumping, drainage, pond filters and effluent pumping. Multiple stage (multiple impellers) they are typically positioned in a borehole, and will generally be used for domestic, business and industrial water abstraction, water wells and oil wells (to create “artificial lift”). They can also be used in seawater uses, firefighting, well drilling, offshore oil drilling rigs, sewage treatment plants and irrigation systems.
Certain submersible pumps are able to transport combustible liquids. In this case it is essential that care is taken. Incorrect operation or using pumps that aren’t designed for the task can result in vapours igniting.
